Signs have accompanied commerce since Antiquity. From the painted frescoes of Roman thermopolium to today's programmable LED signs, they tell the story of craftsmanship, commerce and the city.

From Antiquity, bakers, taverns and Roman thermopolium indicated their trade through painted frescoes, engraved bas-reliefs or hanging objects. In Pompeii marble signs have been found depicting a loaf, an amphora or a phallus (a symbol of prosperity).
Facing widespread illiteracy, signs became purely pictographic: a mortar for the apothecary, a key for the locksmith, a crescent for the baker. Hanging above the street on wrought-iron brackets, they were so numerous that a royal ordinance of 1669 regulated their size and height.
Signs became works of art. Locksmith-blacksmiths competed in ingenuity to create brackets, scrolls and ornate supports. Guilds imposed standards and the sign became a true marketing tool ahead of its time.
Hand-painted enamelled sheet-metal signs invaded commercial façades. Gas lighting then electricity (late 19th c.) made signs visible at night. The first illuminated signs using incandescent bulbs appeared.
Frenchman Georges Claude presented at Paris's Grand Palais the first neon sign. His company Claude Neon Lights conquered the world. Neon became the emblem of glamour, from Broadway to Piccadilly Circus to the Champs-Élysées.
LEDs progressively replaced neon: 10× lower consumption, 5× longer lifespan, programmable colours. Dynamic and connected signs appeared. Regulations impose night-time switch-off and light sobriety.
From the Pompeii fresco to the connected LED sign, one constant: to be seen, to stand out, to make one's brand exist in public space.
